10 Steps for Hiring a Nanny
- Determine Your Requirements - Before you start looking for a nanny, you first need to determine what you need or expect the nanny to do. Do you simply need a person who can provide childcare within your home? Do you want someone who will perform light housework or help with homework? Are you looking for a live-in nanny? You need to be able to fully communicate what you need and expect as an employer.
- Determine the Schedule Needed - You need to determine what days or hours you need a nanny for your children. Do you need a nanny for set days and hours? Do you need a nanny who can provide flexible services?
- Where are You Going to Search? - There are many options available for families that are looking to employ a nanny. Traditional forms of job postings can be used including newspaper and online classifieds. There are also companies that can assist in the hiring process for a fee.
- Review Applications and Resumes - Evaluate all received applications and resumes. Narrow down the possible hires to two or three people who meet your requirements based on the application.
- Call References - Calling references confirms the application, resume and integrity of the potential hire. References should be a combination of personal and professional contacts.
- Perform a Background Check - It is important to conduct a background check to verify the applicant has a clean criminal record. If the nanny will be transporting your children, you should also check the applicants driving record.
- Face-to-Face Interview - Once you have narrowed down the applicants, you will need to perform a face-to-face interview. A face-to-face interview allows you to assess the applicant and ask any additional questions you may have.
- Test Interaction with Children - Even if you are impressed with an applicant, it is important to see how that person interacts with your children. By setting up a brief interaction with the applicant and your children, you can evaluate the interaction and receive feedback from your children.
- Hire with a Trial Period - Once you decide to hire an applicant, you should have them sign an employment contract. The contract should include a trial period in which you can dismiss the employee if you feel that the situation is not working out. Common trial periods for nannies range from 30 to 120 days.
- Reevaluate - Once you have reached the end of the trial period, you must determine whether you are satisfied with the service your nanny if providing. If you are not pleased with your nanny, you have the right to dismiss that person. If you are happy with the service your nanny is providing, make sure you communicate that to the nanny.
